The Dallas Cowboys haven't drafted a quarterback since 2001 when they selected Georgia's Quincy Carter in the second round. By the look of things, that could change this year.
The Cowboys had four quarterbacks among prospects at Valley Ranch on Monday as part of Dallas Day, and Texas A&M quarterback Stephen McGee will be in later this week.
Arkansas Casey Dick, Missouri's Chase Daniel, New Mexico States Chase Holbrook and Sam Houston State's Rhett Bomar worked out for Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson on Monday. All four played high school football in Dallas-Fort Worth -- Dick at Allen, Daniel at Southlake Carroll, Holbrook at L.D. Bell and Bomar at Grand Prairie.
I thought it went well, said Bomar, who leaves for St. Louis this morning to meet with the Rams. It was fun to be out there at the Cowboys place and wear their gear.
Although the Cowboys have Tony Romo entrenched as their starter, they are looking to upgrade behind him after going only 1-2 while he was out with injury last season. Dallas released backup Brad Johnson in the off-season. They traded for Jon Kitna, but Kitna is 36.
The four quarterback prospects in town Monday had a quick workout, throwing one after the other to several receiving prospects, including North Texas Casey Fitzgerald.
It was good to get out there and have that experience, Holbrook said. It was a little quicker than I expected it to be. They got us in and out pretty quick. Now, it's another waiting game.
Daniel and Bomar were asked to draw up plays for Wilson and Garrett. Head coach Wade Phillips stopped by for a while too.
It's a real good sign, said Daniel, who threw for 12,515 yards and 100 touchdowns at Missouri. They showed interest in me, I felt, more than they had before, and I felt I had a good throwing day and impressed them on the board. That's something I need to do. During this time, you've got to sell yourself, and you've got to sell that you're a championship-caliber player and that you want to be on a team, and you want to be a Dallas Cowboy, and those are all things I want to do.
TCU's Aaron Brown was among three running backs at Valley Ranch on Monday. He joined Wyomings Wynel Seldon, a Plano East product, and Texas Techs Shannon Woods, a McKinney North product, in workouts.
With Marion Barber, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice, the Cowboys appear set at running back. But Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett had Brown run some routes at receiver, both in position drills and individually. Brown also fielded some punts.
With Marion and Felix here, I was like, I don't think I'll be playing running back here, Brown said. But he saw something that made him think I could play receiver as well. Hopefully, they saw I have some talent as a punt returner too.
Brown has visited Detroit and Indianapolis. He finishes his visits at Oakland on Wednesday.
